Day 6 of Deep South travel study — Jackson, Ms

This is the last night (of two) in Jackson, Mississippi. Today, we visited the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the Canton Freedom House today, where we were surprised by the 66-year old landscaper who was available to let us in & tour the space, even though regular operating hours = Mon-Fri. Totally unexpected, but really cool to hear the guy’s story of participation in the Movement. His name is Michael Henry (or Henson), AKA: Peetuk (I think, it was a little hard to understand him). After that surprise, we got food and went out to a nice reservoir to picnic for dinner. Good vibes there.

Tmrw morning, we’re touring the home of the late Medgar Evans, who was assassinated during the Civil Rights Movement. Then, it’s on to Greenwood, Money, Ruleville, Sumner, and Marks, Ms. After those stops, we’ll head to Broad St. Historical Park, Bryant’s Store, Fannie Lou Hamer Memorial Garden, Emmet Till Interpretive Center, Delta Regional Mule Train Market and Museum, before settling into Clarksdale, Ms for the night.
