Systems vs. goals

I’ve heard of an idea differentiating b/w goal-setting & system-setting. I dig it. Systems may be better b/c you have a mechanism to reach the desired target, whereas goals can be limited b/c you remain in state of failure for long periods of time, which can be de-motivating. Systems are made up of smaller goals, to be sure, though.

Ex: My goal right now is completing bachelor’s degree in History. The system in place is to continue utilizing historical research methodology to analyze, draft, & present work to colleagues. This system is broken down into smaller pieces to tackle each project/course as needed. Benchmark goalposts are semester & project completion. Feedback is built-in via professor critiques and grades of projects.
